چکیده

The purpose of the POSTGRES project was to build a next generation DBMS to rectify the known deficiencies in current relational DBMSs. This system, constructed over a four year period by one full time programmer and 3-4 part time students is operational and consists of about 180,000 lines of C. POSTGRES is available free of charge and is being used by perhaps 125 sites around the world. This paper describes the major concepts of the system and details its current state. We restrict our attention to the DBMS ‘‘backend’’ functions, and make only passing mention of the front end tools available for POSTGRES.

Object Management in Postgres Using Procedures

This paper presents the object management facilities being designed into a next-generation data manager, POSTGRES. This system is unique in that it does not invent a new data model for support of objects but chooses instead to extend the relational model with a powerful abstract data typing capability and procedures as full-fledged data base objects. The reasons to remain with the relational mo...

Principles of Database Management System Extensibility

This paper presents the mechanisms being designed into the next-generation data manager POSTGRES to support extendability. POSTGRES supports user defined data types, operators, functions, aggregate functions and access methods. This paper sketches the specification and implementation of each of these constructs.

Next Generation Database Management Systems Technology

Database management systems (DBMS) technology is advancing in two directions. The evolutionary or parochial direction raises questions such as: How can DBMS technology meet current new application requirements? What features might it offer users? The revolutionary direction raises questions such as: What requirements will the next generation of computing, applications, and users place on DBMS t...

The POSTGRES Rule Manager

This paper explains the rule subsystem that is being implemented in the POSTGRES DBMS. It is novel in sev eral ways. First, it gives to users the capability of defining rules as well as data to a DBMS. Moreover, depending on the scope of each rule defined, optimization is handled differently. This leads to good performance both in the case that there are many rules each of small scope and a few...

A Shared Object Hierarchy

This paper describes the design and proposed implementation of a shared object hierarchy. The object hierarchy is stored in a relational database and objects referenced by an application program are cached in the program’s address space. The paper describes the database representation for the object hierarchy and the use of POSTGRES, a next-generation relational database management system, to i...
